Hawthorne Manor was built in the 1800's by Julian Hawthorne, the son of author Nathaniel Hawthorne (or so the legends go). It has been reported that Nathaniel's illicit relationship with the woman who inspired "The Scarlet Letter" was actually Julian's mother, and was also a strong practicing witch. Since its construction, it has been the home to numerous Hawthornes and has been visited by some of the world's most endearing citizens: Charlie Chaplin, Ernest Hemingway, President Theodore Roosevelt, the Barrymores, the Hustons and others. The house became vacant in the early 1960's and soon fell into a state of disrepair. The reason for its sudden emptiness was never discovered although rumors report that the estate was haunted. In fact, one report indicates that Julian's favorite room had been the massive library and that his spectre can be seen still perusing the shelves on occasion. Several years ago, reclusive Katherine Manley, a 1940's film star ("Glass Hearts," "Evening in Paris," and "Tale of a Lonely Woman"), bought the estate and had it renovated to its previous glory. Every inch of Hawthorne Manor was refurbished and Ms. Manley supposedly took up residence in the upper floor of the house. Ms. Manley was reported missing and her body was later found in the manor's attic with a hole in the center of her forehead. The manor's ownership was bought back into the Hawthorne family by Julia Hawthorne, one of Julian's descendants. Since its renovation, the Manor has become a sort of haven for creatures of the night, the things we say we don't believe in, but deep down, we do. Yet few have seen Ms. Manley and some even believe that she has died in the upper recesses of Hawthorne and that her decaying body just lies up there, alone. But even the darkest creatures dare not enter her rooms: for some reason, they fear and respect her, almost as if she were one of their own... Want to know more about the manor?
