The Darkness Inside
It hurts.
It hurts, and it gnaws, and it screams, and it howls, and he doesn't know how he can handle the searing fire behind his eyes. So he doesn't, and for the first time since his parents' death, Bruce Wayne allows tears to fall down his broken face. Alfred's right hand is on his shoulder, offering support, while his other hand holds out a folder of papers to sign. Bruce finds enough momentary comfort in Alfred's touch to pull himself together, so that he might pen his two initials and five letter last name onto each page.
His grief returns, a relentless tide of pain. The folder falls to the floor, his signature scattered everywhere, as the cave echoes with his rage. He is certain the Joker can hear him and is laughing at all the pain that's been wrought; one day the Joker will die by his hands. Batman will have his revenge, but first he must learn to fight again.
Alfred's hands have already scooped up the strewn papers, and as Bruce slumps against the controls of his computer the butler places another folder next to his arms. This folder is thinner than the other and it holds no papers that need to be signed. A one-way ticket to Osaka peeks out from behind the red-brown sheath and clipped inside is a bundle of American money large enough to get Bruce, and Batman, through the trials ahead.
Master Kasuragi is expecting him, has already heard of the painful events of two years past; the sensei understands his pupil's pain and will help him regain his balance. But all things take time.
And until the darkness in Bruce Wayne has bled itself out, he will hurt.
