Changeling: The Dreaming is copyrighted and trademarked by White-Wolf Inc. It is a game set in the World of Darkness (also copyrighted and trademarked by White-Wolf), a world almost exactly like our own. Within this world Vampires, Werewolves, Ghosts, and Mages run wild and dreams are dying.
Enter Changelings, Stage Left.
In a world where it's easier to ignore the monsters under the bed and the ghosts at your door, dreams have become trampled and most are long forgotten. Yet, in times long ago the world was created by dreams, or perhaps dreams created the world. It is from these dreams that the most powerful beings in the universe were born: the Tuatha De Danann and the Fomorians.
The Tuatha De Danann are the children of lighter dreams, while the Fomorians are the children of nightmares. These creatures, in turn, created the lesser Fae: satyrs, trolls, goblins, pooka and various other creatures. It was only these lesser Fae that would become the focus of our beloved game.
Throughout the beginning of their lives many thought themselves better than the mortals, and it so happened that when mortals began to disbelieve, the children of dreams began to die. This time is known as the Sundering or the Iron Age. Through the Iron Age the Unseelie Court (all fae who felt the darker side of dreams best suited them) fought with the Seelie Court (all fae who felt the lighter side of dreams best suited them). It was this battle that many think caused the final outcome of the Sundering: the Shattering.
The dream world was ripped from the mortal realms violently when the Shattering occured. The Sidhe, self-proclaimed (and oft supported) rulers of the Fae, scrambled to enter Arcadia (the home of all faeries) before the gates to the Dreaming closed forever. In their haste they left behind most of their loyal (and unloyal) servents to be crushed by disbelief. Those who were left behind (or chose to stay of their own free will) began to realize that the only way to save themselves would be to wrap their immortal souls in the body of a mortal host.
So were Changelings born.
In the year 1969, man landed on the moon. In one brief instant the collective imagination of all the world allowed the gates to Arcadia and the Dreaming to open once more, expelling thousands of Sidhe into the modern world. Shortly after allowing all of these souls to exit, the gates to Arcadia closed once again, leaving only the Dreaming open for use.
The Sidhe immediately began to reclaim their right to rule, which eventually sparked the Accordance War. It was only the rise of High King David that stopped the end of this long and bloody conflict. Since that time the realtions between Nobles (Sidhe) and Commoners (those not of Sidhe blood) have begun to chafe, High King David has disappeared, and creatures long banished from the mortal world have started reappearing.
The times are growing darker. Will the Changelings survive? That's up for you and your troupe to decide.
In this game you will take on the guise of one of the nine main Kith [Boggan, Eshu, Nocker, Pooka, Redcap, Satyr, Sidhe, Sluagh, Troll] or the various other creatures that hail from the Dreaming [Selkies, Gloams, Fir-Bholgs, Chimerae]. The purpose of the game is to stay alive in a world that's forgotten you. Inspire dreams in others to live off their creativity or Ravage them, leaving them barren and uncreative for the rest of their days.
