DESCRIPTION:
Gareett is a short, thin framed, drow who wears a look of apathy as casually as he wears his ever present piwafwi. Dressing always in black or deep purple, and showing no weapons other than a small dagger at his hip. His long silver hair is bound and kept under his cloak, as is his left hand most of the time. No other adornments are worn save for his house symbol worn on a plain chain around his neck.
BACKGROUND:
Gareett was the second born son of Vikana, Matron mother of house NedKosak. Gareetts older brother Raychem showed great prowess as a warrior at a young age and became the youngest weaponsmaster in House NedKosak history. Raychem trained Gareett in the way of the warrior from the moment that he was able to wield a sword. Much to his teachers dismay, Gareett showed no real aptitude for the fighting arts, instead preferring to read his aunt Moriahs books and listen to the teachings of Kiaransalee.
It was in the early attempts to gain access to his aunts library that Gareett began to show his calling. Although the magical wards were set against intrusion from outside the house, and any NedKosak noble could bypass them, the mechanical traps were not so intelligent. Yet through trial and error and some tips he had learned from the patron of the House, Dunlope. He was able to time and again gain entry to the library secretly, or so he thought. Dunlope was watching and studying Gareett to see if he could truly learn the art of the silent, the unseen, the ever-present, the all hearing, the Rogue. Gareett, though mostly untrained, did show great promise, and Dunlope was ready to exploit his new pupil. One night while Gareett was sneaking into the library, he was shocked to find Dunlope sitting in a chair right in front of the door. He did not begin to make excuses or even try to run, he simply closed the door behind him and walked before Dunlope. "Patron, I have been sneaking in here to read Moriahs books for several months now." The young drow stood rigidly, awaiting his inevitable punishment. "Do you wish to continue this thirst for knowledge you have my son?" Gareett was taken aback. Dunlope had never shown signs of fatherly interest towards any of his offspring, even the females. "Yes, father, I do." Dunlope rose from the chair quietly and moved quickly to the door. "Follow me."
Dunlope led Gareett down to his private quarters, and then through a passage that Gareett was unaware existed inside the house. The passage led down to a cavern of sorts. The cavern was mostly naturally formed, except for the floor, which had been smoothed and cleared of most all obstacles. Gareett saw four others in the cavern, all were males. Along the eastern wall were several chests of various designs, all had locks and looked to be of the finest make. At the ceiling was a shelf that held what looked like bottles of wine and water. It was odd, since the shelf was some thirty feet in the air. It wasnt until Dunlope stopped at the far end of the chamber that Gareett began to smell and see the two dead bodies on the ground. From what he could tell they had been dead for several weeks atleast, and whatever had killed them, also mutilated them. Dunlope turned to the young man. "I will be silent about your transgressions into the library, however you will have to train with my students here and learn my ways." Gareett realized that he was not being offered anything but being told, although he did not enjoy a threat more than anyone else, he realized his choices were limited. "As you wish father. I am always your faithful son."
The next year was a busy one for Gareett. Finding time between his fight studies with Raychem and his studies of stealth with his father left him precious little time for learning, and for magic. Gareett knew that he would have to approach his aunt if were to ever have the chance to learn magic. During any of his free time, Gareett would beseech his aunt to take him as an apprentice, and to pull him from his studies with Raychem. House NedKosak was not blessed with an abundance of females like most houses. This is most likely the reason that when Gareett showed interest in the magical arts, that Moriah encouraged and aided him. Moriah being both Priestess and Mage was able to guide Gareett on the path of magecraft and still ensure his devotion to Kiaransalee. Gareett wanted to be just like his aunt, but knew that it was impossible to serve Kiaransalee as a priest, and chose to give his life to Kiaransalee through magic. Gareett knew that he would never be more than an average fighter, but that he had the ability to excel as a mage, and through this excellence he would serve Kiaransalee by aiding and protecting her priestesses.
It was several years later. Gareett had been accepted into Zaktifar, and was walking with his cousin Vienetta, Moriahs oldest daughter. They were returning to the NedKosak compound after visiting some friends at Arach-Tlabbar. The beginning of the attack was somewhat of a blur for Gareett, one moment he was speaking with his cousin- the next, he was thrown to the ground and watching three hooded figures stab her repeatedly. ~None harms a priestess of Kiaransalee,~ his aunts voice came to him. Then more blood flowed from his cousin. ~None harms a priestess of Kiaransalee.~ Again he heard the voice and it begins to fill him with rage, suddenly those early years of training by Raychem came to him. ~None harms a priestess of Kiaransalee.~
Gareett lunged at the back of one his cousins attackers and he smiled as he saw the front of his dagger poke through the now dead drows chest. ~None harms a priestess of Kiaransalee.~ This time the voice was louder- had he said it aloud? He was unsure. The other two quickly changed their attacks from the apparently dead form of Vienetta to Gareett. Gareett let the drow slip from his dagger and fall to the ground, as the other two made a coordinated leap towards him. Gareett was quick enough to sidestep one blow, but these were no common muggers and the second attacker caught him in the side as he spun. Instead of pulling away from his attacker though, Gareett grabbed the blade, still in his side, and held firm with his right hand as his left shot forward and caught the throat of the surprised mugger. If he had spent more time training with swords perhaps this battle would have been different, but it was obvious that it was over. Gareett had managed to kill two of the three attackers but as the chill began to overtake him, he realized that the still bleeding wound in his side was worse than he thought. Gareett fell to his knees as the third attacker watched his friend fall still clutching his throat. The hooded drow bent down to Gareett and grabbed his companions sword, Gareett winced at the pain and looked him in the eye. None harms a priestess of Kiaransalee. This time he knew that he had said it allowed, as the hooded figure chuckled and replied, "Harm her? We killed her you fool! As I will now kill y-" His words trailed off as he saw his two friends stand up next to him. The sight must have been to much for him, for he let go of the blade still in Gareett and leveled his own at the lumbering forms of his former companions. The two zombies made short work of the third attacker, as Vienetta moved over to Gareett and removed the sword from his side. "None harms a priestess of Kiaransalee," she whispered in his ear just before he lost consciousness.
When Gareett woke up he found he was in his bed at home and that his wound has been bandaged and did appear as grievous as he had thought. Moriah and Vienetta were both there and they smiled. "Welcome back, young mageling," Moriah said. "Are you sure you dont want to train as warrior, Gareett?" Vienetta chided. Gareett smiled looked at his cousin and his aunt then with a soft voice stated, "None shall harm a priestess of Kiaransalee&And live." Behind them, where Gareett could not see from his bed, Dunlope also smiled, and left the room, thinking to himself, ~Ye,s Gareett has done well. He will need to do better in the future, but he has passed his first test. It cost me some good men, but it is a small price to pay to improve the skills of my son.~
