This page features a particularly interesting PC or NPC, his or her history and a character sheet. The featured character will be changed from time to time and there may be two or more on this page on occasion.
Last month we featured Tillin GoldEeye Willex and Tillin is still on the page
We are now featuring Duko Whellhance, a Player-Character run by C.J. Carella.
Duko Wellhance
Duko is the second living son of Edo Wellhance, a freelance forester and hunter. Edo was not much of a father (or a human being, or a barnyard animal, to tell the truth). Lazy, sleazy and shifty, Edo tried to raise his kids as proud, ignorant and violent rednecks. Duko has been struggling with that heritage ever since.
Lacking a role model (and a mother – Duko is sure his mother was a saint, but he only has dim memories of her and Edo, liked, well, women of loose morals and looser clothes, so, it’s unlikely his mother was any different), Duko spent his teenage years hovering around the local garrison, the 62nd Imperial Foot. He hunted wild goats (a delicacy for some Wen peoples, not really popular among the Ayomme) for them; in return, they let him hang around and some of the soldiers taught him how to use the short sword.
In the last few months, Duko’s life has changed radically. He discovered his father had been smuggling gold (highly illegal), and has traveled far and wide, fought a variety of monsters, and discovered Remii Arkem, the blacksmith’s spoiled daughter.
At first, Duko found Remii to be a strange, unusual woman. Over time, he became fascinated by her courage, her strong will, and her charisma. He is now convinced that he is in love with her. Unfortunately, Duko does not have much of a frame of reference when it comes to romance (his father’s dictum is “If you pay ‘em, they will come.”). Furthermore, he is sure that she does not love him (although they’ve had something of a physical relationship) and fears that “Whathisname” (Arlest Dow, a Wen officer) will sweep her off her feet. Duko is also something of a paranoid, and, despite his best efforts, a bit of a redneck.

Our first character featured on this page was one of my favorite non-player characters.
Tillin GoldenEye Willex
PERSONAL DATA: Name: Tillin GoldenEye Willex Species: Human Gender: Female
Age or Date of Birth: 25 at the start of this campaign
Background: She was born into a very musical family. Her father, Wil Willex, was a very famous troubador. His songs were sometimes very sophisticated but were just as often rustic or humorous. His best-known work would probably be "Don't be a stranger, be a DEAD stranger" or "The Road to you is open but there's just so damn much traffic." On the other hand he wrote the tender ballad "No gold is brighter your eyes..”
Her mother, Illis GoldenEye is almost as well-known as Wil in the Ayomme home country. However, her career could not really bloom as she would not have been accepted in the Inner Empire. Wil performed some of her songs. Her own performance of either “You never SAW so many mountains,” or “If I had a stick for every gem you promised me” are guaranteed crowd- pleasers. Any Player Character who meets Tillin would likely know this much of her background.
While neither her mother nor her father practiced magick, Tillin was tested for the ability, since it ran in other branches of her family. She showed an aptitude for both magick and music and was early accepted into the Inner Guild (the magically gifted) of the Musician’s Guild. Like her mother, she has no chance for a really lucrative career but she can certainly make a good living in the taverns of the Ice River Valley. The Inner Guild is totally unknown to any Impreial officials and has no official standing. The Musician’s Guild itself is well regarded.

In practical gaming terms, an observer will have seven fewer rolls to spot the caster than would be normal under the circumstances. The usual rules about never giving somone NO chance apply. If the observer would normally get seven rolls, he or she must make the roll succesfully twice. If the observer would normally get Five rolls, he or she must make the roll four times without failure. People beyond the range of the spell, about one hundred yards, are not affected by the spell except that they do not hear the music. Normal spotting rules apply for them.
HER ADVENTURES THUS FAR
Tillin travelled extensively in the Ayomme highlands but prior to this year she had seen little really hard traveling. However, her trips into the mountains with Remii and Duko and the mysterious mage Jules have led to a great deal of adventure. She hasn't revealed all that much as the campaign is yet ongoing.
Her new song "the Blacksmith's Spoiled Daughter" is clearly about Remii and expresses pride in the Ayomme tradition of women fighting right there beside the men. Remii comes across as quite a hero but the title of the song is also illustrated with a nice turn of humor. Duko appears as a version of another Ayomme stereotype, the silent forester, deadly with a bow and impossible to shake from a trail. He also comes across as hopelessly in love with Remii who has ambitions elsewhere. The mage is seen pouring fire from his wand into one fell creature after another but saying little and seemingly bound by the wishes of his teacher.
In another song, "Fire in the Hills," it is clearly Tillin herself who is the hero. While her use of a spell is left out, it would be imprudent to let the authorities know that Ayomme singers, let alone Ayomme WOMEN singers could practice magic, she hides until a dragon is in easy range and then ambushes the terrible creature. In the ensuing shoot-out, the dragon is driven off badly wounded.
Tillin's singing and her new songs have made for a lucrative fall and winter. She played the Golden Trident in Hengst's Landing for quite a while. In late fall, she moved up to Minehead where the Torch & Flame is paying her an unprecedented 200 Silver Pennies per week for performing. While in Minehead, she has taken up with Baggo, Duko's brother who is apparently not a wanted murderer as was originally thought.
Remii Arkem here, the blacksmith's daughter. Not the "spoiled" daughter as some like to jest, but a hard-working Ayomme woman making her way to fame and fortune in the man's world. After year's of studying, I have passed my test to become a journeyman blacksmith so come to my family's shoppe and I'll make you a fine weapon to smite anyone on your "enemies list."
I would like to say a few words about my friend Tillen. She is a fine friend who hits on all the guys I like and makes up funny songs about me. She is a fine warrior too. She got fried by a dragon while Duko and I ran it off. We just killed that pesky dragon a few days ago, with me leading the charge fighting it face to face, while Duko shot it with him mighty bow and Arlest Dow, deputy commander of the 62nd foot aided me in chopping it down. Too bad Tillen went up to the mounatins, she could sing a song that for once would'nt make me look like a spoiled child. So Tillen, my friend, may you come down and visit soon for we miss you at the Golden Trident. Just for the record, in case you were wondering how I wrote this, since I can't write, I didn't. I had Mother do it. I just spoke it. So there. Signed, Remii Arkem
From the pen of Jules Gyrolsall, the Apprentice Magician.
A' GoldenEye is certainly a talented singer and song-writer. She is at home on the road and trail and does not ask for any special privileges. However, perhaps I am too much influenced by the culture of my adopted Wen people, I feel that she is too free with her physical affections. She is also too free with her opinions and not quite respectful enough of our leader, Duko.
