Chaos

The Civil War is Over. Merlin has Lost.

Merlin never ascended to the Throne of Chaos as was planned but was defeated by a powerful Rival to the throne named Moloch. Shortly before Merlin was to be crowned King in Chaos half a dozen rivals for the throne made themselves known. The most powerful of the rivals was Moloch, an Ancient and Powerful Lord of Chaos. Moloch had secretly allied himself with several of the most Powerful Houses of Chaos, and with their support convinced many that a half breed of Amber should not sit upon the Throne of the Courts.

Moloch also gained support by stirring up the Lords of Chaos against Amber and the Royal Family, blaming them for the Death of Swayvill and other problems in the Empire. The Result was that Moloch was able to amass enough power to take the Throne and have Merlin driven into exile.

The Houses of Chaos

"No," I replied. "No, but I heard so much from my father of the succession in Amber, with all its cabals, intrigues, and double crosses, that I almost feel an authority on the subject. I imagine it could be that way here, too, among the Houses of Swayvill's descendants, there being many more generations involved."

The noble Houses of Chaos are Direct Decedents of the late King Swayvill. Each of The Nine Great Houses can trace their ancestry back to one of the Nine Sons of Swayvill.

The influence a noble House holds depends greatly on it's size and the number of Logrus Masters within it. Each House also controls it's own army, and any number of Shadows and Ways. These two resources also help determine the strength of a House.

The Houses:

There are nine great houses, each headed by a Duke or in some cases, a Duchess. In descending order of approximate power, they are:

Mahan
Leader: Open.

A House of Ancient Necromancers. House Mahan has always been a powerful and feared House. They have a reputation for being extremely loyal to the Crown and have often used their powers of Necromancy to assist the Crown when needed, raising armies from fallen enemies to fight for the Crown. It's power has greatly increased since Moloch's taking of the throne.

Hendrake
Leader: The Duchess Belissa Minobee.

"Hendrake Ways is very much of the military sort," he went on. "Glory of battle. Martial honor, you know."

A House of noble Warriors. It has the largest military force of the houses and is bound by honor and tradition. Its members are constantly warring somewhere in Shadow, constantly conquering new shadows and training shadow armies. It is the largest of the Houses and controls massive armies on dozens of worlds.

Sawall
Leader: Prince Jurt

A House of Sorcerer's, Logrus Masters, and Politicians Sawall has been one of the strongest political powers in the Courts for many ages and has gained even more power under Jurt's rule. Jurt himself has been one of Moloch's strongest supporters and is often seen at his side.
Sawall is well known for the massive and labyrinthine art collection of its' long time Duke, Gramble.
